Chris King Hubs

Chris King Components are legendary in the cycling world. They produce some of the highest quality Hubs and Headsets. They manufacture everything from their lock rings to the balls in their bearings. We will focus on their hubs.

Why is this being included?:

I am including the Chris King hub in here because it was designed by taking ideas from coasters. It is also a good example of the quality of product that can be made available when the time and energy is put into it.

How does it work?

King hubs are different than normal interally engaging “cassette” hubs. They use two rings (one attached to the hub shell and one attached to the driver) that continuously run against one another. When the hub is let to “freewheel”, the engagement ring is pushed against the hub-shell-engagement-ring in a ratchetting fashion. When pedaled forward, “threads” on the driver (just like the ones on coasters) draws the engagement rings into solid and perfect engagement. This prevents any slipping in the mechanism.

Here are some videos of maintenance on the hubs that may be able to help explain the mechanism.

And lastly, here is the product manual for the BMX version of it.
