Sym hub review:
I've been using coasters/freecoasters for around 21 years now, and never had one that was absolutely perfect.
I've got fairly close with a mod I did on the odyssey hazard, more on that another time! Anyway, this sym hub came up at the right price. It was purchased by a chap I know by the name of Shawn, who didn't like it and asked Mason and Richard at Custom riders to sell it for him. He'd had it less than a week. So after a lot of thought, I bought it, wondering if it's any good. Well it is. Its very very good. It's probably the best there is, I don't think there is anything out there that comes close. It is incredibly smooth, far far smoother than any other freecoaster I've seen and would give most normal hubs a run for their money. It engages solidly and has NEVER SLIPPED. Not a bit, I've never had so much faith in a freecoaster. My one is a bit heavy but there are lighter ones available.
When I first got it, I had a bit of a problem with it catching, so I called Mike Jory who makes the hub and he was very helpful, even though he was in poor health at the time, he took a great interest in my problem and did all he could to help, spending a considerable amount of time on the phone talking me through different options. What transpired was my new euro bb was too smooth and the cranks were moving on their own and the hub was engaging, it was not a fault of the hub at all. The hub was also set to min gap which didn't help.
So once I'd tightened my chain a bit the problem went away, I now have a Spanish bb which is much tighter and I've had no problems since. It needs next to no maintenance, no cones to adjust and gives me no problems. No stripping it down to grease mods or adjust springs. great!!If you can afford it, you really should buy one of these. They really are THAT good.
